What is Depression?

Depression means the feelings of hopelessness, sadness, anger, or loss that interfere with everyday activities in a person's life. It is a mood disorder. Nowadays it is a common problem in the world. More than 264 million people are affected by depression.

A survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that from 2013 to 2016 in America 81% of people who are 20 years or then older in any given 2-week period had depression. According to World Health Organization (WHO), depression is the main cause of disability.

A depressed person loses interest in his work, he gives low output. He cannot get refresh and enjoy anything. Suicide can be led by depression. Due to suicide, more than 800 000 people die every year.

In this article, we will discuss the symptoms, cause, and treatment of depression.

The symptoms of depression can vary from person to person. Some symptoms can include:


        Sadness, irritability, anxiety, or mood swings


        Getting anger, aggressiveness mode


        Loss of interest and hopelessness to anything

        Losing interest to the nearest person


        Avoiding family or relatives

•        Brain Structure (If the frontal lobe of your brain is less active you have a greater risk)


•        Some medical conditions such as insomnia, chronic illness, chronic pain, etc.


•        Misuse of drugs


•        Mental illness


•        Stressful events in life such as relationship breakdown, family breakdown, economical problems, etc.


•        Failure etc.

It is very difficult to live with depression. By treatment, it can be managed. You can manage it with others' support, medication, or Psychotherapy treatment.

Support: It is very necessary to giving support to a depressed person. This support can be given by his/her family, partner, friends, or others. It’s very important to give him some time and listen to his problem and if possible, give him a solution.


Medication: You can take some medicine by contacting your healthcare provider. He may prescribe you some medication such as antidepressants, antianxiety, etc. But medication has some side effects such as nausea, low blood sugar, weight loss, etc.


Psychotherapy: You can contact a psychologist. He will do one-to-one counseling. If needed, he will give you some therapy such as Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT)

Not only these, but you can also avoid depression by doing exercise & avoid alcohol. You have to take care of yourself. You can remove depression by getting sleep timely, eating diet food, communicate with family and friends or others nearest person and sharing with them your problems, doing those work in which you are interested, avoiding negative people.
